The
association brings together Lipizzaner breeders, owners, riders and
enthusiasts.
In
the 1960's, Mr. Roger Bellon was the first to import Lipizzaners and establish
a stud in France. He formed the association "The French Friends of the
Lipizzaner" in 1965.
When
her father passed away, Ms. Joëlle Bellon became President of that association.
In
1980, at the instigation of the French association, the International
Lipizzaner Federation came into being
In
1989, the Lipizzaner gained official recognition in France from the National
Stud and the French Studbook for Lipizzaners was opened.
In
1997, the association changed its name to “Association française du Lipizzan” (A.F.L.) [the Lipizzaner
Association of France].
In
1999, with the association's support, Austria was recognized as the
"cradle of the breed".
The
association's goals are to promote the development of the Lipizzaner breed
while taking care to preserve the purity and quality of the horses.
In agreement with the
official bodies (including the National Stud), the association organizes breed
shows. To be licensed, stallions must be approved by the Lipizzaner Committee.
The association also contributes to managing the studbook and is involved in
testing for the purposes of recording genealogies
